A significant portion of the internet has already sung high praise for OG. Tomb Raider The trilogy remaster’s lovely determination to revitalize a classic. I’m glad you did. If I found out that amazing thing on my own, I would feel pretty sad and maybe even stupid.
However, one aspect of the remastered trilogy that I feel hasn’t yet received enough praise is the game’s performance, which I really like. There is something for everyone here. Some achievements are expected, some are hard to find, some are fun, and many are crap.
Tomb Raider I-III Remastered has some of the most fun achievements I’ve ever seen.
To get my point across, I think there’s no better example than the fact that there are achievements, especially for killing bald enemies in a variety of ways. As a man who still has hair but whose hairline on his family tree portends a barren future, I could feel attacked, but the specificity of the play was too funny to get upset about. We also know that bald people tend to be evil in games and movies.
Likewise, there are expected achievements, such as killing a T-Rex, one of the most memorable encounters from the original game.
Cool, but expected. This is when the game comes at you at a rapid pace because there are also achievements for doing absolutely no harm to the game. I spent most of my life thinking that just being nice wasn’t an option.
I would have never found out about this if I hadn’t been cheating and looking at the achievements list on Steam. I dare say that finding all of these achievements on your own is harder than all of Lara’s challenges in the game combined.
Yes, some achievements are just plain stupid, like the achievement of finding the different ways to kill Lara in the game (there are 36 of them) or the execution of genocide that kills everything in the game to kill. There’s also one that makes Lara scream twice during a single fall, which makes me wonder how many players are aware of this.
One of my favorites is a very specific achievement: “Play like you did on consoles in 1996.” You can get it by saving the game less than 86 times while playing. Man, if I were a young gamer, I think that would give me a hard time.
Petting animals has become a big thing among gamers, so naturally there are a few animal-related achievements as well. There is a seemingly simple way to pet your cat. But the problem is that there are no cats in this game. The game challenges players to find the elusive cat (spoiler: Doing a handstand on top of the Sphinx.)
And that’s not even the wildest accomplishment involving animals. There’s a gorilla kill at the highest point of the level, which is all meant to be a King Kong reference. But the most extreme was when 11 wolves had to be brought before four Toltec warriors for a brazen feat called “Dances With Wolves.”
I tend to dislike achievements and trophies in games.
But these achievements aren’t just funny. They add thematically appropriate layers to this game. Because we assume that no gamer is more likely to be a trophy collector. Tomb Raider Pan. I really like what they came up with for this game in terms of achievements and that’s the best praise this game can get from me.
I think we all have the ‘perfectionist gene’ to some degree. I loved every moment of running towards the global elite. Counter-Strike GOAnd I will never fully recover from my Diamond Promotions fiasco. League of Legends. But performance in single-player games is something I don’t really care about. This is especially true for story-based games, where trophy notifications can break player immersion during dramatic story moments.
The moment I arrived at my friend’s house, I saw a character cutting off his finger to save his son from a psycho. heavy rain, and immediately upon receiving the “Golden Finger” trophy notification, it occurred to me that I would disable all achievement notifications forever. Fortunately, I started playing. Tomb Raider I played the remaster with an account other than my main account and some trophies started appearing and I was having too much fun with them to disable them.
Is this a sign to give the achievement/trophy another chance? I’ll give it at least some thought, and it’s already an achievement.
