Threads by Instagram brings you one step closer to being part of something bigger. Starting today, selected users can try out a beta feature that connects Threads directly to Fediverse.
Fediverse is a fairly new concept in social networking, similar to a vast, interconnected network of independent servers. Unlike traditional social media platforms managed by a single company, Fediverse is decentralized and gives users greater control over their data and interactions. A current example of one such platform is Mastodon, one of the pioneers of the growing movement.
With the new beta, Threads users who are 18 years of age or older and have a public profile can choose to share their content on Fediverse. Additionally, if you use Mastodon or another Fediverse compatible platform, you can now follow Threads users in beta and interact with and share their posts.
Threads is also working toward full compatibility with ActivityPub, the open source protocol that powers most of the Fediverse. This means that the interaction between Threads and the Fediverse app will soon become more seamless.
However, this integration is entirely optional. You don’t have to share Threads content just because you use the app. However, if you’re curious about Fediverse, you can join the beta by going to your Threads account settings and turning on the “Share Fediverse” toggle.
This move highlights the growing trend towards open and user-centric social media experiences. Integration with Fediverse demonstrates Threads’ openness to collaboration with other platforms, giving users more control over their connections and choices.
