An all-digital version of the Xbox Series This isn’t the first time rumors of an all-digital Xbox Series X have surfaced. Late last year, Microsoft was going through trial over its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and documents containing evidence of an all-digital Xbox Series X were part of the presentation. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer eventually said some changes were made to the plans, but he didn’t deny that those plans don’t yet include a new version of the Xbox Series X.
The refreshed version of the console also had a cylindrical shape. It’s the exact opposite of the current rectangular design. This rumor comes at an interesting time, as Spencer spoke about the rumor that the Xbox will run disc-less in a recent interview. Since the introduction of the all-digital Series X last year, rumors have begun to surface about Microsoft’s plans to ditch discs.
The good thing for Xbox fans who prefer physical media is that Spencer has confirmed that discs will be around for the foreseeable future. Spencer said Xbox isn’t getting rid of discs. But he acknowledged that Microsoft follows its consumers. And Xbox consumers are currently buying more digital games than physical games.
The all-digital Xbox Series X may come in white and be priced lower.
In addition to the Summertime release date, the new discless Series X consoles will reportedly launch at potentially lower price points. As noted by eXputer (via Insider Gaming), Microsoft could charge $50 or $100 less for a new version of the console without a disk drive. It would make sense if the prices were correct. Sony is offering a digital version of the PlayStation 5 at a cheaper price than the disc model. The all-digital version may also include new colors, and Microsoft plans to release it in white like the Xbox Series S.
It is also expected to have an updated heatsink that will help improve cooling of the console. eXputer also revealed that the console is expected to launch sometime between June and July. It goes without saying that these rumors should be taken lightly. It’s likely that Microsoft is planning to release an all-digital Xbox Series X, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. Until then, this is just a rumor. But this plan would fit well with Microsoft’s strategy. Especially if the console is cheaper but offers the same performance. The Xbox Series S is a great value. However, it has lower performance than Xbox Series X.
