Design and Features
My wife loves caring for the hummingbirds that come to our yard. We have four hummingbird feeders. This is peak season, so there are often 10 to 15 hummingbirds buzzing around the yard. When the opportunity came to review the isYoung Smart Feeder, it was a resounding YES!
The part I was most curious about was AI bird recognition and the quality of videos and photos. Another aspect I liked was that the feeder was self-contained. It has a built-in camera, Wi-Fi, battery, and storage options. I didn’t have to worry about running extension cords or cables in the yard. The included solar kit connects via USB-C (included), but finding a spot that could catch some sunlight was fairly easy.
At first, I placed the feeder on a pole in front of the house, where it gets the most sunlight. But I discovered that the built-in battery lasts up to 6 months! Now you can install it on the fence next to the coop outside your kitchen window.
The video and picture quality are 1080, which is fine for viewing on social media or on a mobile phone. You have the option to download videos and photos to your phone or tablet through the app. There is a free plan that saves up to 3 days of rolling history to the cloud and includes up to 20 seconds of motion recording.
At first, I couldn’t figure out why the AI bird recognition feature wasn’t working. Then I realized this is a subscription based feature. I signed up for the $4.99/month plan for a 30-day free trial. Additionally, up to 60 days of rolling history in the cloud, up to 3 minutes of motion recording, motion alerts, person detection, package detection, and vehicle detection have been upgraded. Then the AI magic began to happen. I received a notification on my phone that a black-eyed junko was being fed! A red-headed house finch also stopped by. Not all identifications were correct, but for the most part they were pretty good. If a species cannot be identified, a list of possible species is provided.
To put the isYoung Smart Bird Feeder in perspective, I use a Wyze Battery Cam Pro mounted on a shepherd’s hook and pointed at my main hummingbird feeder. The Wyze cam’s battery also lasts for about six months. Wyze Cam is advertised as supporting 2K resolution, but honestly, I couldn’t see any difference between the Wyze and isYoung cameras on my phone. The biggest difference I noticed is that the isYoung camera focuses closer than the Wyze cam. If the Wyze cam had been mounted as close to the feeder as the isYoung camera, the image would have been out of focus. This is where the isYoung camera excels. This camera is designed to focus very close while other cameras tend to focus farther away.
Assembly, installation, setup
It was easy to assemble and the directions were clear. There are a few pieces to screw together, but all the technical stuff is already in place. First screw the antenna to the back and then fit it to the roof. It is hinged for easy refilling. The perch is secured with snaps and then reinforced with thumb screws at the bottom. Tilting the built-in camera down removes the silicone plug, allowing you to insert a microSD card (not included) and access the power button.
The isYoung Smart Bird Feeder also includes a mounting bracket. This bracket allows you to mount the feeder on a pole or attach it directly to a wall or fence. Option to hang feeder is not included. I decided to mount it on top of a broom handle, although I could have relocated it to attach to a fence. A solar connection kit is also included. It’s a simple USB-C plug that connects from the solar panel to the back of the feeder.
The next thing to set up was the app. The VicoHome app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Just install it, connect to Wi-Fi and you’re ready to go!
Overall, I was able to get up and run in about 10-15 minutes.
What I Like About the isYoung Smart Bird Feeder

- A variety of feeding options (seeds, nectar, fruit) to accommodate a variety of birds.

- A subscription is required to utilize AI bird recognition.
final thoughts
I love this Young Smart Bird Feeder! It serves a great purpose as a bird feeder that can be placed anywhere and can recognize birds with a paid subscription! It’s a fun distraction and I find people are interested in which birds come to visit. I have shared access to the feeder and have family members from all over the country watching. When mounted in the front of the house, it also acts as an additional security camera for us.
