How do the leaked PS5 Pro specs compare to the base PlayStation 5, and will the mid-gen console be a significant upgrade?
Rumors suggest that the PS5 Pro will be released in late 2024, but Sony has yet to even confirm the console’s existence.
Despite no official announcement about the console, a lot of information has been leaked about the upcoming PS5 Pro. In fact, the full specifications of the PS5 Pro have already been revealed!
We know the PS5 Pro will be more powerful than the base PS5, but seeing the specs of both consoles side-by-side will give you a much better idea of how they compare.
PS5 Pro and basic PS5 specs
Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the PS5’s specs and the PS5 Pro’s leaked specs:
PS5 | PS5 Pro | |
CPU architecture | 8 cores/16 threads Zen 2 | 8 cores/16 threads Zen 2 |
CPU clock speed | 3.5GHz | 3.5GHz/3.85GHz |
GPU compute unit | 36 CUS, RDNA 2 | 60CU, RNDA 3 |
TFLOP/GPU clock speed | 10.23TF/2.23GHz | 33.5TF/2.18GHz(TBC) |
GDDR6 memory | 16GB at 14Gbps | 16GB at 18Gbps |
Memory available for games | 12.5 GB | 13.7GB |
Memory interface/bandwidth | 256 bits/448GB/sec | 256 bits/576GB/sec |
The only other factor to keep in mind about the PS5 Pro is that it uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, Sony’s new AI upscaling technology.
This new software improves the performance of the PS5 Pro in ways the base PS5 can’t. So we don’t yet know how effective it is.
Overall, the spec differences between PS5 and PS5 Pro are very minimal.
The Pro model’s GPU is definitely more powerful, but the CPU only gets about 10% more power when overclocked. This likely means that the CPU will limit the PS5 Pro’s performance to a point where it won’t be a significant improvement over the base PS5.
In fact, most new games may not be able to run at 4K 60FPS on PS5. Instead, expect AAA titles on PS5 Pro to have additional graphics features like ray tracing or increased marginal frame rates.
Stay tuned for the official announcement of PS5 Pro in the summer. We also expect to see a full performance breakdown of the console before it hits store shelves!
