As for Melody and Phoebe’s friendship and everything else in the film, Lind called their dynamic friendship “a connection between two souls.” She acknowledged that some of it could be read as romantic and that Phoebe wanted to be intimate with someone, but that both characters “are still two kids in a lot of ways. They are cut from the same cloth and ousiders, each in its own way. […] And now they’re connecting on this massive level from two different dimensional planes, and they’re just trying to figure out this world together. I like that we didn’t define it as this or that. Sometimes when people do that, it ruins it. “It’s so specific and absolute, but it’s not as absolute as the character.”
