when Ghostbusters: Afterlife It’s over, it’s really over. With the Ghostbusters defeating new and old Gozer, we see Ecto-1 driving into New York City. That’s about it. What exactly was the next step for the Spengler family we followed throughout the film? How did they feel? I met a ghost version of Egon? We never know.
sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which hits theaters this week, answers some of those questions, but not all. After the table-setting prologue, the main story begins two years later by reintroducing the Spenglers, who are not only now living in New York, but have already established themselves as Ghostbusters. Along the way, questions such as how they got there and what they are doing are answered, but fans of the previous film may wonder what happened in the meantime.
“We made a decisive choice as writers to take a leap forward within two years.” frozen empire Co-writer and director Gil Kenan told io9. “There was actually a scene we wanted to do at the end. afterlife, And never fired a shot. It showed a Subaru family driving down a highway outside Oklahoma. Behind it was a tow vehicle covered in a tarp. And the tarp was flapping around and I could see some sort of Ecto-1 behind it. But of course we shot a beautiful coda with Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore character bringing the Ecto-1 to the firehouse. That was our way of connecting to the event. frozen empire “I was planning to dig into it.”
That’s right. The film’s end credits scene, which shows Winston returning Ecto-1 to New York, is the only real link between the films. But Kenan and co-writer Jason Reitman did Let’s discuss further.
“We wrote a sketch of the story about what happened in between,” Kenan said. “And early on, Jason and I decided that those stories weren’t going to be essential to the story we were telling. frozen empire But it was interesting. So we actually developed it into a comic book. And they are coming out. They are really cool and fill up the two years leading up to the event in Oklahoma. frozen empire.”

But ultimately, what makes me jump right into the story is that it’s about the Spengler family and how they finally settle into the home they’ve been looking for since the beginning of the previous film.
“We really wanted to set up the idea of finding a home for our new characters, the Spenglers,” Kenan said. “And that search began with dislocation at the beginning of the war. afterlife And the idea that this farmhouse is going to be a way to solve the problem, which is Callie’s practical problem, is where this family, who are looking for something to cling to, is based. A little permanence. So we have already started the process of developing that topic. [original Ghostbusters] The fire department is a potential target for this family that will solve a problem they need and need to solve. Items to pin in the same way Ghostbusters Fans were demanding a return to the fire department. It was a process that happened organically while writing. afterlifeIt felt like a really natural setting for how this movie could begin.”
