examine – Our family room has been the main gathering place in our home since we moved in in 2005. Then I got a new sofa, and it lasted me almost 20 years and two kids. It was still comfortable, but the shape was rough. When the opportunity arose to review the FlexiSpot modular sofa, I jumped at it. (Not literally. We want our furniture to last!) This was also an opportunity to redo the entire room, so what started out as an email agreeing to review the sofa turned into several weeks of picking out new carpet and painting the walls. It has changed into a process. But it all actually started with a very comfortable and unique new sofa.
What is that?
The FlexiSpot modular sofa is a sofa, but it’s probably different from any other sofa you’ve ever purchased. Sofas are sold in pieces, and you can purchase as many pieces as you need to fill your space, from a single chair to a huge sectional. It’s all the same pieces that literally click together.
What’s included?
- For each modular block you get:
- Base
- 4 feet for base
- base cushion
- in the back
- back cushion
- Depending on the configuration, there may also be aspects.

Design and Features
The FlexiSpot modular sofa is a truly unique sofa. Basically, figure out what size sofa you want based on the space you need to fill and the shape you want (straight sofa, “L” shape, “U” shape, or something more unusual). You can then order enough modular blocks to create that shape. The Flexispot website also offers numerous pre-configured options.
The sofa I ordered is made up of 4 blocks, 3 blocks horizontal and 1 block perpendicular to create a chaise lounge shape, which ended up being an “L” shaped sofa. Depending on the configuration, each modular block can include a base, seat cushion, backrest and sides. These blocks basically snap together with heavy metal clips and are available in a variety of configurations. One of the biggest advantages of the Flexispot sofa system is that each base has large storage space under the cushions.
The back cushion is not attached, so you may move slightly or fall over. There are several ways to set up blocks. For example, from the system we got, we can create a chair and a sofa, a couple of loveseats or a sofa system that we initially set up. Keep in mind that there are only two “sides” (the armrest-like parts), so not all parts are complete, but it’s possible.
Assembly, installation, setup
Each block comes in two large boxes. Because our sofas were shipped from multiple locations, we ended up delivering 8 large boxes over several days, which meant we had to find a place to store them all. Please note that the pieces are large so they will require some space for storage and assembly.
Once you receive it, assembly is very simple as one hex wrench is included. The pieces are well packaged, and there is an extra cardboard strip under the tape in each box to prevent cutting the sofa with a new knife you read about in The Gadgeteer when cutting the tape.
Each back or side has two heavy metal “clips” attached with two bolts.
Each base has four legs that can be screwed into place.
Once everything is attached, assembly is as simple as sliding the clips into the slots in the base and adding cushions. The sides and back are additionally attached with brackets that attach with two bolts at the bottom. The blocks are then simply attached to each other using heavy metal “U” shaped clips that slide into adjacent slots in adjacent blocks.
For my “4-block” system, assembly time was about 45 minutes in total. The only problem I had was that when installing the rear onto the short side of the “L” the bolt holes for the bottom bracket connecting the rear to the base were not where they needed to be. There are several ways to construct each block, and the construction method we chose applied to the clips that attach the back to the base, but not to the brackets on the bottom. I simply drilled a pilot hole and used wood screws instead of the included hardware, but was surprised that there were no corresponding bolt holes like in all the other configuration locations.
Performance
If you are looking for a formal sofa that allows you to sit upright, this may not be the sofa for you. The base cushion is too deep. I am 6’1” and have to stoop to put my feet on the floor.
But if you’re looking for a sofa that you can lounge around in and occasionally use as a guest bed, this is the sofa you want. It’s only 3 inches narrower than a twin bed. We have a sofa in our “less formal” living room, so we’re using it to curl up on. The cushions are soft and comfortable and there is plenty of space. Four people can fit comfortably and it doesn’t feel crowded. The back cushion is not attached, so it can move around and fall over, and can sometimes look sloppy, but it can also be reconfigured to help you rest by holding on to the cushion. compromise plan. The only downside is that unused slots for attaching adjacent blocks are visible under the cushions on the front of each base.
Overall, the Flexispot sofa has received rave reviews from the whole family, especially my youngest daughter, who spends a lot of time on the sofa.

final thoughts
I had never thought about modular sofas, but it turned out to be a really good concept. Although it is not a unique design or the pinnacle of interior fashion, it is very functional, comfortable and configurable. Our “formal” living room still has a more formal sofa, but the Flexispot modular sofa is perfect for our informal living room!
