One of the biggest universal annoyances in life is that TV explosions and soundtracks are always incredibly loud, while the dialogue is quieter than a church mouse. This is especially true in modern action movies and TV shows, which seem to be mixed to shake the walls, but are mostly unintelligible.
So we go into the settings. We adjust the placement of the soundbar. We turn on subtitles. We do everything. Some of this helps, but it’s never enough. DTS is trying to solve this problem once and for all with some well-placed AI. The company just announced its DTS Clear Dialogue feature, which is “an AI-based solution designed to improve the clarity of spoken dialogue on your TV.”
DTS says its AI algorithms identify and amplify dialogue in the audio stream, eliminating the aforementioned issues. The system also allows for personalized audio settings, where one person’s “perfect” might be another person’s “please stop.”
This is an on-device toolset that will eventually be adopted by TV manufacturers. DTS has not announced any partnerships yet, but the company’s technology is generally adopted by all the big brands: Sony, Hisense, Philips, LG, Vizio, etc. We’ll be watching for the first TVs to integrate this feature. The company is currently demonstrating this service at the IFA technology conference in Berlin.
DTS partners with content providers to bring theater-quality audio to home releases, most recently enhancing the sound of MCU films. Oh, and could we use a little of that AI-enhanced dialogue magic the company promises for MCU movies?
