With absolutely no fanfare or build-up, Dead Island 2 is now available on Game Pass for consoles, but not PC.
The game has suddenly appeared on the service despite Microsoft announcing new games coming to the service just two days ago.
Dead Island 2 was first announced in 2014 and has gone through a series of delays and developer changes. But to everyone’s surprise, the game emerged as a surprisingly strong one, achieving a respectable Open Critic score of 75 based on 1253 reviews.
Sales numbers were equally robust, with 1 million units sold in the first three days of sales and 2 million units in the first month. According to publisher Deep Silver, this makes Dead Island 2 “the biggest launch of all time in terms of units and revenue.”
One of the reasons it didn’t reach PC Game Pass may have to do with its PC exclusivity. It’s currently only available for purchase on the Epic Game Store, but exclusivity ends on April 22nd when it launches on Steam. This is just speculation, but part of Epic’s deal is that the game can’t appear on other PC stores or subscription services until that deal expires. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see it coming to PC Game Pass sometime after it launches on Steam.
