Google is introducing the April update to ChromeOS users with several notable features, including customizable keyboard shortcuts and mouse button actions. This update also improves offline text-to-speech voice support. ChromeOS M123, which will be rolled out gradually over the next few days, brings a variety of user-friendly improvements.
A great feature of this update is the ability to customize keyboard shortcuts, a feature commonly found in other desktop operating systems. To enable this feature, users must manually enable a configuration flag called “#enable-shortcut-customization”. However, Google plans to streamline this process by enabling keyboard customization shortcuts by default in the upcoming ChromeOS update M124.
Additionally, users can now personalize mouse button actions, which is especially useful for users who use mice with extra buttons. Actions such as taking screenshots, muting, unmuting, and inserting emojis can now be assigned to these additional mouse buttons. Additionally, users have the flexibility to assign dedicated key combinations for tasks typically performed via keyboard shortcuts.
Aside from these headline features, ChromeOS M123 also brings a few smaller upgrades. Users can now adjust their preferred language for each Android app through the ‘Settings > Apps > App Management > App Language’ menu. This update also improves text-to-speech capabilities to provide more natural speech in 31 languages and features, even offline.
Overall, ChromeOS’ April update introduces significant customization options for users, allowing them to customize their experience based on their preferences and usage patterns.
