Baldur’s Gate 3 was a phenomenon. One year later, in 2023, it still stands out as an outstanding piece of work. I think we’ll see ramifications from that in the coming years, at least one of which is already evident. Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have approved several. dungeons and dragonsGame-based games from several major publishers. The most recent is Gameloft. announced this week We’re working on The Forgotten Realms, a co-op survival title set in a D&D environment.
Other D&D-based titles announced include a VR title from Resolution Games and a multiplayer title from Starbreeze. I’m not complaining. D&D has a wealth of lore to draw from and built-in bullshit mechanics. Funny story: My husband and I have been together for 6 years when we realized we had a common interest in TTRPGs. I don’t know how we managed to get along without essential bonding experiences for the better part of a decade. The point is, I’d much prefer a D&D based game if it was made with the same love and humor as Baldur’s Gate 3.
Another major story that caught my eye was the divorce between Embracer and Saber, and how they split the studio when they divorced. Beacon founder Matthew Karch, who acquired the company, said the sale “protects the livelihoods of hundreds of professionals,” seemingly obliquely referencing Embracer’s layoff tendencies. I don’t believe this will completely prevent a “restructuring” of Embracer, but at least some of Saber’s games are still in development.
On a personal note, I’m still playing some of the new releases, including Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. I’m looking forward to some big releases coming later this month, including Dragon’s Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, and Princess Peach: Showtime! I’m not sure how I’m going to fit all these games into my schedule, but how much of a problem will it be?
