Happy Future AI had an interview with the creator. Babette Peppa Founder of BakeSpace.comHere’s what she said:
What inspired you to create BakeBot, and how is it different from other AI kitchen assistants or recipe generators on the market today?
When I first started working with AI, I immediately recognized the potential benefits and challenges it could bring to home cooks. The key is understanding how home cooks actually use, share, and store their recipes. Luckily, our team at BakeSpace.com came into the AI space with nearly 18 years of experience running an online community for home cooks.
The first AI kitchen assistants to hit the scene were basic recipe generators where users would type in a few ingredients and the AI tool would spit out a recipe. Some allowed users to save recipes to online recipe boxes, but the experience was minimal.
We decided to build BakeBot using a more holistic approach based on how people cook at home, and we believe the result will be the world’s most useful AI cooking companion.
BakeBot is more than just a recipe generator: it’s the first free AI tool that answers cooking questions, generates amazing recipe images, digitizes handwritten recipe cards, stores/shares recipes online, and even publishes digital cookbooks.
BakeBot is powered by contextual AI that leverages the collective know-how of the BakeSpace.com community. It also uses agent AI to think spontaneously rather than responding to data via predefined algorithms.
BakeBot empowers homemakers to confidently brainstorm and experiment with ideas in the kitchen.
BakeBot is filled with the experience and wisdom of real home chefs in the BakeSpace community. Can you elaborate on how the AI is trained to incorporate this grassroots expertise?
BakeBot’s contextual AI leverages the collective know-how of a community of over 1.5 million diverse member profiles and over 100,000 member-submitted cooking, baking, and food-related recipes. We asked our members to provide feedback at every step, which helped us define what home cooks want from their AI assistants. BakeBot can make uniquely relevant recommendations based on real-world experience. In fact, it can anticipate and solve questions that home cooks might not even think about.
For example, someone planning to bake a wedding cake might forget to consider how to transport the finished cake without damaging it. BakeBot anticipates this need and provides helpful tips without prompting.
BakeBot is like a skilled chef who intuitively understands what you’re looking for and offers relevant advice. It’s not only smart, it’s focused on cooking and powered by a real community.
You mentioned that BakeBot adapts to different cooking styles and experience levels. Can you explain how you tailor recommendations and interactions based on user preferences?
BakeBot adapts to each user’s cooking style and experience level in three ways:
First, you can choose how BakeBot interacts with you through three persona options: “Home Cook,” “Professional Chef,” and “Adventurer” (a bit cheeky and unpredictable). Each responds with a style, ingredients, and tools that suit the user. It’s like having an experienced friend in the kitchen guiding you every step of the way.
Second, BakeBot’s agent AI adapts to wherever the conversation takes it, rather than sticking to a predefined algorithm. BakeBot brainstorms and collaborates with users, encouraging experimentation and confidence. Users simply say, “I don’t know what that is,” or “Can you make a recipe that only one person can eat?” and BakeBot responds.
Finally, BakeBot engages users in virtually any language, from Albanian to Zulu, and converts and displays information using a variety of measurement systems.
Many home cooks worry that AI could dehumanize the cooking experience. How does BakeBot maintain warmth and human touch while using cutting-edge technology?
I understand why people have that initial concern. It’s a natural reaction to many new technologies, especially those called “artificial intelligence.” It sounds a little ominous. Because BakeSpace is a community, we were able to build BakeBot based on everything we’ve learned about how real people create recipes and cookbooks on our platform. This helps BakeBot become a trusted member of the community that other members can turn to for help and inspiration. Combining technology with the heart and soul of a grassroots community, we’re taking cooking AI to a new, more human level.
One of BakeBot’s standout features is its ability to digitize and preserve handwritten recipe cards. How does this work, and what does it mean for families trying to preserve their culinary traditions?
I love old recipe cards. In fact, I usually feel the urge to buy old recipe boxes that I find at garage sales. There is something charming and very personal about the recipe cards and all the little notes left behind. Over the years, our members have uploaded countless recipes from recipe cards, and BakeBot makes the process easier than ever.
With BakeBot, members simply upload a photo of their recipe card and it is automatically converted into a perfectly formatted recipe in BakeSpace. It even works on illegible handwritten cards with missing information. BakeBot decodes the text and fills in any gaps or missing ingredients. Once the recipe is uploaded, it can be saved, shared, and added to the family cookbook.
BakeBot can help you create amazing recipe images and publish digital cookbooks. How do you think these tools can improve the way home cooks share and showcase their recipes?
Over the years, we’ve seen members often struggle with creating Instagram-worthy images for their recipes. With BakeBot, anyone can now create mouthwatering images based on BakeBot’s chef-like understanding of recipes. General-purpose image generators like Midjourney require precise prompts, making them cumbersome. When creating a recipe on BakeSpace, you can either upload your own images or have BakeBot create them for you.
Since 2012, we’ve helped home cooks, nonprofits, brands, and more sell thousands of digital cookbooks using our Cookbook Cafe platform, which includes cookbook publishers, readers, and marketplaces. Now, with BakeBot, anyone can create top-notch recipe images for their cookbooks.
You’ve highlighted how BakeBot anticipates its users’ needs, such as offering tips for carrying wedding cakes. Can you share more examples of how BakeBot goes beyond standard recipe recommendations?
We built BakeBot with advanced agent AI, which means it adapts to conversations and dynamic situations, rather than responding to data through predefined algorithms. That means it can think spontaneously.
For example, if someone is on a recipe page and asks BakeBot a series of questions related to that recipe, BakeBot will compile the answers and create a completely new recipe. BakeBot even goes a step further and actually anticipates questions that users might not even think about on their own. It provides recipes and preparation suggestions, lists nutritional information, and helps prevent/deal with kitchen emergencies.
I recently baked a loaf of soda bread and accidentally added too much Greek yogurt to the recipe (I forgot to leave some for the wash on top). After mixing all the ingredients together, I realized my mistake and mentioned it to BakeBot. I said, “Help, I’ve added all the Greek yogurt, do I need to adjust the oven time?” BakeBot assured me that it was a common mistake and that the bread would be fine. In fact, I didn’t even need to adjust the baking time. BakeBot knew!
Contextual AI is a powerful part of BakeBot. How do you handle specific requests, like dietary restrictions or unique cultural recipes, while still delivering personalized and relevant results?
One of the features that BakeBot is most proud of is that you can modify any recipe, including any recipe submitted by a member to BakeSpace.com. Sometimes a recipe looks delicious, but you realize it’s not gluten-free, or it contains pine nuts (and you have allergies), or you want to make it vegan. With BakeBot, you just say “make it vegan” and it starts modifying the recipe until it’s exactly what you want. Once it’s perfect, you can save it to your online kitchen. This makes the tedious and tedious process of searching Pinterest or Google for the perfect recipe a thing of the past. Now you can take any recipe you find and make it your own.
What role do you see BakeBot playing in the future of food communities and social networks? How does it reinforce the community spirit that BakeSpace has built over the past 18 years?
The goal is to make BakeBot the go-to tool for home cooks to rely on for help in the kitchen. BakeBot is always ready to help, whether you want to turn inspiration into a recipe or need to reverse a cooking disaster. In all my years in the industry, I’ve never seen a technology that can empower home cooks like AI. We launched BakeSpace in 2006, and we’ve never stopped innovating.
BakeSpace.com has received significant recognition, including numerous Webby Awards. How does the development of BakeBot fit into BakeSpace’s overall mission and legacy in the food industry?
BakeSpace has evolved significantly over the years to better serve home cooks, and BakeBot represents a significant milestone. Home cooks are smarter than ever and demand innovation from the online platforms they invest their time and energy in. While this isn’t the first time BakeSpace has released a cooking AI tool, this is the first time it’s combined advanced AI with the heart and soul of a real food community. While it’s received many accolades over the years, it was particularly exciting to be recognized at this year’s Webby Awards for its innovative use of AI to foster community and connection.
What innovations or expansions do you foresee for BakeBot in the future? How will BakeBot evolve to help home cooks in ways we might not expect?
Things are moving so fast that it’s hard to predict where we’ll be in a year or two. In the short term, we’re working on a premium version of BakeBot (“BakeBot Pro”) with voice commands and a bunch of amazing new features. We’re also improving the customization options to make BakeBot a more personalized kitchen assistant. Stay tuned!
