Apple’s Potential Investment in OpenAI to Bolster AI Strategy
Apple is reportedly in talks to invest in ChatGPT creator OpenAI as part of a new funding round. AI startups will be valued at more than $100 billion. The deal would put Apple in line with other major investors in OpenAI, such as Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion over multiple rounds and currently owns 49% of OpenAI’s revenue, and fits well into OpenAI’s broader AI strategy.

Apple has been steadily building its AI capabilities through strategic acquisitions and product development, including (but not limited to):
- SiriOur acquisition of VocalIQ (2015) and Turi (2016) significantly enhanced our ability to understand and respond to real-time user interactions using natural language processing (NPL).
- Apple’s Core ML framework allows developers to: Build AI solutions directly into your iOS appsAllows on-device processing to improve user privacy and efficiency. Apple’s decision to run AI locally on the device rather than in the cloud reduces the amount of personal data transmitted, reducing the potential for security breaches and maximizing privacy.
- Many of the Apple Watch’s features are powered by AI, including heart rate monitoring and fall detection. AI health tech is expected to grow in wearables.
- Apple has revolutionized smartphone photography with AI-powered features like Smart HDR and Night mode, which improve the quality of photos taken on iPhone.
- Apple is leading the way in AI privacy with what it calls “differential privacy,” pioneering a variety of approaches to analyzing/processing massive data sets while maintaining user anonymity.

Integrating OpenAI’s latest technologies, including ChatGPT, across Apple devices could give other products and services access to more advanced AI capabilities (like Siri), potentially changing the way users interact with Apple technology.
field of vision
Apple’s potential investment is not final and terms have not been disclosed, but the investment and partnership with OpenAI would accelerate AI development and device capabilities across the Apple ecosystem, raising the bar for consumer electronics, home automation, and smart devices.
