What the Queen of Pop Can Teach Us About Marketing
I am a huge fan of Taylor Swift.
Not only for her music, but also for her marketing skills. Behind the glitz and glamor, Taylor is a phenomenal businesswoman. She has an incredible understanding of marketing and personal branding.
Here are some business and marketing lessons I learned from her:
#1: Long-term thinking and action.
Taylor Swift released her first song when she was 14 years old.
She hasn’t stopped since. She has continued to write songs and build her audience for the past decade or more and still maintains her popularity. Most people don’t have this kind of stamina or foresight.
Why is longevity important?
welfare. Her rise to fame means that most of her growth has occurred in the past two or three years. Most of her current audience was not alive or very young when she began singing her songs.
I have been writing online for the past five years.
But in the last 12 months alone, we’ve grown our audience by 80%. 2023 was a landmark year for online writing. I went from less than 4,000 followers to 32,000 in the last year.
I plan to write forever. I will never stop.
That doesn’t mean I’ll stay on Medium forever. But I will always post my words somewhere. I can’t help but write every day. It feels like therapy to me.
Success takes much longer than you think.
#2: Embrace vulnerability, even when it’s difficult.
In all of her songs, Taylor shows her vulnerability.
From being heartbroken to feeling cheated and going crazy, she doesn’t shy away from the ugly side of love and relationships.
This makes her very relatable.
She will be a billionaire and a global pop icon in the next few years. Most people couldn’t relate to that reality. But through this…
